Karen Miller has ridden horses since she was a young girl and has
taken care of horses and their people since 1986. She began her horse
industry career at a 22 horse hunter/jumper facility in
Concord, Massachusetts.
In 1988, Karen accepted a position at a small private stable with a
combined training orientation. She moved with the
stable when they relocated to California the next year. In 1995 she
returned home to the northeast and opened Hair Of The Dog Farm in the
Monadnock region of southern New Hampshire, where she now lives and
continues to provide horse boarding and training services.
Karen has a BS in Biology and Communications from Fitchburg State
College. She also breeds black German Shepherds, is a member of the
New Hampshire Horse Council and the United States Eventing
Association. In 2006, she received her certification as an Equine
Natural Movement Series practitioner.
Testimonials
I have boarded my horses at Hair of the Dog Farm with Karen Miller
since 1997. The key reason that I chose Karen's farm was because of
Karen's animal antennae . By that I mean that Karen is tuned
into each individual horse. She has a deep understanding of the nature
of horses, instinctively sensing their needs, physical changes and
emotional nuances. It's natural that she would combine this ability,
her compassionate and nurturing personality, and Equine Natural
Movement to produce wonderful results - much to the delight of the
horse and owner!
My mare, Desi, was born with some conformational challenges. She had
surgery as a weanling for contracted tendons. My vets advised me that
she could live a sound and productive life if properly managed. Over
the years, she has progressed well, proving to be a quick study for
any new training exercise. Despite her intelligence and eagerness,
there have been times that she plateaued in her training in a way that
made me wonder if she had reached her potential physically. Canter
has always been Desi's weakest gait. The first plateau, consistently
taking correct leads and the ability to sustain canter, was resolved
as a result of chiropractic work. The second plateau once again was
about the canter, as Desi was irregular and inconsistent in her
canter. This was resolved through choosing a Reactor Panel saddle,
which allowed her to canter comfortably, with regularity and
consistency. The third plateau once again involved canter. I could
only dream that one day Desi would be able to perform a balanced and
rhythmic collected canter. This past summer, after having had a few
sessions of Equine Natural Movement with Karen, Desi began to
experiment with collected canter, all on her own! Yes, under saddle,
and with me giggling in astonishment with each and every step. Thank
you Karen Miller - this is a dream come true for me - and I can only
imagine how good it feels to Desi to be able to move in ways that she
couldn't before.

Rosey is my 12 year old Quarter Horse/Morgan mare. Over the past few
weeks of riding I noticed that her stride was short and she would
always swing her head to the right, especially when walking down
hills. Karen Miller started her sessions on Rosey. I was a bit
skeptical how such a small woman was going to help such a large animal
with just her hands. Each of the sessions was well over an hour in
length. I have never seen such a positive response. Rosey love the
sessions and Karen was patient, kind, knowledgeable and had an endless
supply of energy.
The day after the first session Rosey was very slow moving in her
paddock. By day 2 she was running, kicking and playing. When I took
her for a trail rider her stride lengthened and she no longer was
swinging her head to the right side. Karen asked that we pay close
attention to what Rosey does on the rides. The friend I ride with
noticed that Rosey's right hip was dipping lower than the left, again,
more pronounced going downhill. As the sessions with Karen continued,
you could see, hear and feel the results of Karen's work. By the the
end of the fifth session Rosey no longer took short strides (after
warming up for a few minutes), her head stopped swinging to the right,
and her hips were even. The benefits my horse reaped from Karen's
therapy were amazing. Rosey is much more comfortable, her performance
has improved dramatically and she genuinely enjoys going out for her
trail rides.

Congratulations on completing the Equine Natural Movement Series
[certification]. How wonderful to know such a helpful method of
healing. I can hear the horses of southern NH collectively sighing in
relief that tension can be relieved and their bodies can finally be
balanced with your help.
I commend you for making a choice to care for animals. Yes, people are
great but there always seems to be a shortage of gifted people willing
to listen to non-verbal cues. You are a perfect candidate for
listening and addressing their needs. I know Chazz appreciated your
work. I hope to continue now that you are certified. Thanks so much
for everything!
